Quickie Newsletter

I know we only recently sent out the spring newsletter edition. However, certain decisions were made at the recent General Meeting, which necessitated keeping you informed in a short time frame. So here it is. We promise to do better the next time..

On the Business side

The retail gasoline outlet has now closed its doors. However, Michel Fortin has re-opened a garage a few doors down from the former location to service vehicles and boats. No gas however, at least not for the present.

And the arrangement we had with him with regards to popcan recycling still holds so keep on collecting them. See my notes on this matter later in this newsletter.

Projects for the coming season

Early this summer, we will once again be taking water samples on both our lakes, for analysis of phosphate levels, water purity and bacteria content. In fact, we have already picked up the testing kit. However, it has been recommended to us to wait until the weather warms up and more cottages are active before proceeding. We will report on the results of these tests as soon as they are known.

Scheduled Events

The next Executive meeting will be held on Saturday Sept. 2nd, 2000. If you have a subject you wish discussed, notify a member of the Executive in advance. They are all listed at the end of this newsletter.

The next General meeting will be held on Saturday Sept. 9th, 2000. As usual, the meeting is held at the Salle des Loisirs on Chemin du Lac Long, and starts at 10:30 a.m. We invite everyone to attend.

July 1st is Canada Day, and since this falls on a Saturday this year, we will have a fireworks display on the lake, see within notes for more details.

Clean-up day on Lake Latourelle is scheduled for July 15th, 2000. Please participate and help keep our lakes safe from debris.

Childrens' and adult picnics have been scheduled for the same date, July 22nd, 2000. See our comments below.

Executive Meeting June 3, 2000

Your President sadly laments the lack of attendance by certain members of the Executive at a meeting, which had been scheduled since last fall. Terry Sametz, who had agreed to host the meeting, could not do so, and the event was held at the cottage of the President. More than one member of the Executive absent for the Executive meeting was also absent at the General Meeting which followed on June 17th.

Last fall, it was decided to reduce the number of Executive meetings held in a year from 6 to 4, and the number of General Meetings during the year reduced from 3 to 2. It was hoped that by reducing the number of meetings members were called upon to attend that the remaining meetings would be better attended. Regrettably, this does not seem to be the case.

General Meeting June 17, 2000

We had our first general meeting of the current season on Saturday morning. Regrettably, Morris Richardson and Laurence Tremblay were the only members of the Executive to attend. Amongst the general membership, 23 members were in attendance.

Morris Richardson noted with some despair the lack of attendance by members of the Executive recently voted into office. All the Executive members undoubtedly had valid reasons not to attend. Pity these other activities could not be reshuffled to accommodate their attendance at the meeting.

Since July 1 falls on a Saturday this year, it was decided to hold a fireworks display on Lake Latourelle on that date. It will take place on a floating raft in the bay in front of the Hoskins/deCarle property (the former Bob Liddle), as was done several years ago.

The membership voted to authorize Morris to utilize $125.00 in association funds to purchase fireworks. It is hoped that other members will contribute to the fund, either by way of cash donations, or by way of fireworks donations. See additional details following.

Regarding the lake clean up, Pat Whelan and Morris Richardson have volunteered their large boats to haul the larger deadheads to shore. Chris Juteau will be on hand with his chainsaw.

The combined picnic for children and adults will be held on July 22, 2000. The event will take place in Tremblay Bay. Lisette Tremblay and the Sametz family have volunteered their properties to hold the event. See notes below.

All members were encouraged to take advantage of the recycling facilities available in Blue Sea. The more we recycle, the longer we will continue to utilize the local landfill site and keep our taxes in check. The recycle bin is located at the grocery store in the village, just as you enter from
Gracefield. They will take your jars, paper, and plastics. See the latest newsletter from the municipality for details or call them at (819) 463-2261.

Remember too, keep those popcans. Drop them of at Michel Fortin's garage or at Morris Richardson's cottage. A portion of the recycling profits from these cans return directly into the association's bank account.

July 1 Fireworks Display

If you have children who will be at the cottage that weekend, and you were planning on purchasing fireworks for their enjoyment, why not contribute to the communal display of the association. Your donations (cash or fireworks) will enhance the public display, and will be gratefully accepted by Morris Richardson up to and including the day of the event.

The show will start at approx. 9:45 p.m. If your cottage property does not front on the display area, visit a friend for the duration of the display.  I am sure they will not mind. Another vantage point is the bridge over the culvert/dam on chemin Lafontaine. The last time this event was held, a good time was had by all. For more information, if required, contact Morris Richardson, in Ottawa, or at the cottage.

Lake Cleanup Day

As previously published, the association will hold its annual lake clean up day on July 15, 2000. We urge all members to lend a hand, as we all benefit from this exercise. We will be starting at approx. 9:00 a.m., Saturday morning. The work will be co-ordinated at the public landing, where people will be on hand to haul in the deadwood and cut up the larger items. We anticipate the work will end some time around noon.

Two short notes in this regard, taken from recent conversations.

One member recently told us they were not renewing their membership because, according to them, we never clean up in front of their property. We reminded them that perhaps the reason was due to the fact that they had never once volunteered to help in the clean-up over the span of years the event has been held and how could we know if they wanted the debris removed
or not.

Another member pointed out that Morris travels around the lake usually twice a day, and keeps an eye on the properties fronting the lake, even on some weekdays when he is at the cottage. However, for some reason, he never passes in front of their property. Was it perhaps because their property has too much debris and his large boat cannot maneuver in all that deadwood. Is it time to clean out the front of their property a bit?

Combined Picnic for Children and Adults

The event will take place on July 22, 2000. Lisette Tremblay and the Sametz family will host the combined event. To get there, access Tremblay Road from chemin du Lac Long Road, directly across from the barn. The road is called "Chemin de la Ferme". Proceed down that road for approx. half a kilometer till you arrive at the Tremblay clan area. A large parking area will be provided right next to Andre Lirette's cottage property.

We will again be renting a porta-toilet for the events. Chris Juteau volunteered to look after the food using a simple familiar menu from previous years. Rita Lingen volunteered to look after the children's fish derby, and Lucie Lejeune will organize the children's games.

The morning will be for the children, with events and fishing to commence approx. 9:00 a.m. We ask the adults present at that time to refrain from bringing alcoholic beverages to the children's activities. Once again this year, we hope to have a gift for every child present. To this end, Rita
will be gratefully accepting donations for the children right up to the day of the event. The children's events will come to a close at approx. 2:30 p.m.

Lisette Tremblay has graciously offered to open up her silo/cottage for public viewing. Some of you will no doubt remember that this property was featured in Cottage Life magazine several years ago. It is something to behold. This visit alone makes the event worthwhile. You will be amazed at the ingenuity of the transformation.

Membership Renewal Forms

The last newsletter enclosed a membership renewal form to be mailed in. Unfortunately, the form erroneously directed mail to a wrong address. If you are mailing in your membership renewal, DO NOT MAIL IT TO THE ADDRESS LISTED ON THE RENEWAL FORM. The correct address is Laurence Tremblay, 7 Brandy Creek Crescent, Kanata, Ont., K2M 2B8.  We regret any inconvenience this may have caused to our members, as well as to the other Tremblays who actually live at the address listed on the renewal form, but who have no affiliation with this association.

The cost remains the same as last year - $15.00 for the primary membership and $10.00 for secondary members. You cheques should be made payable to APELL (not the other spelling listed in both languages on the renewal document). Do not wait for Morris to come calling. Please, save him some time and effort and send in your renewals by mail, or drop them off either
at Laurent Tremblay's cottage, or Morris Richardson's.

Morris Richardson's mailing address is 305 Donald St., Ottawa, Ont., K1K 1M6. You may also mail your renewals to the association address which is APELL, case rurale 4, R.R.1, chemin du Lac Long, Blue Sea, Quebec, J0X 1C0.
